Getting tested isn’t just about knowing your status,it’s about giving yourself peace of mind, feeling secure in your well-being, and making choices that support both you and the people who matter to you. It’s a small act of care that can bring comfort, confidence, and reassurance.

Frequency of STI Testing in Edmonton

At Community & Choice, we encourage sexually active individuals to prioritize their health, and one of the simplest yet most caring ways to do so is through regular testing. We recommend getting tested at least once a year to ensure that you’re looking after yourself in the most proactive way. For those who may be engaging with different partners, consider testing every 3 to 6 months as an extra step in caring for your well-being.

It’s important to remember that many STIs don’t show symptoms at first, which is why regular testing is such a thoughtful and empowering choice. It’s a way to stay informed, to protect your health, and to care for those around you. Testing isn’t just about addressing problems—it’s about embracing your health and well-being. By choosing regular testing, you’re taking a positive step toward a healthy future, and we’re here to support you along the way.

STI Treatment Edmonton

STIs can often be treated or even cured if caught early, so it’s important to stay proactive with your health. If you’ve been diagnosed with an STI, it’s essential to complete the full course of medication or antibiotics and avoid unprotected sexual activity until you’re finished. This helps prevent the risk of passing the infection on to others and gives you the best chance for a full recovery.

Wondering if you might have an STI? Regular check-ups with Community & Choice can help keep you informed and at ease.

If you ever have questions or need guidance about STI testing, we’re here for you. Your privacy and well-being are always our top priority, and we’ll keep everything between us confidential.

Testing and results!

Following your consultation, we will be sending your lab requisitions directly to the appropriate laboratory as well as to you for your records. These requisitions outline the necessary tests discussed with the doctor, and you will need to visit a laboratory to have them completed. If your tests involve a blood draw, we completely understand that needles aren’t everyone’s favorite! Rest assured, lab professionals are highly skilled in making the process as quick and comfortable as possible. A deep breath, a moment of distraction, and perhaps the promise of a well-earned coffee or treat afterward can make all the difference. Please ensure you bring a copy of your requisition (either printed or on your phone) when you visit the lab. If you have any questions about which lab to go to, whether an appointment is needed, or how to prepare for specific tests, feel free to reach out, we’re happy to assist!

STI tests typically screen for common infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV, and may include others like herpes or HPV. Regular testing is crucial for early detection, preventing complications, and stopping the spread of infections, as many STIs don’t initially show symptoms.

STIs are most commonly diagnosed in young adults aged 15-24, but can occur at any age. Consistent testing is recommended for sexually active individuals, regardless of age.

Risk factors include having unprotected sex (vaginal, anal, or oral), multiple sexual partners, a history of STIs, and not using barrier methods like condoms. It’s important to practice safer sex and get tested regularly if you are sexually active.

STIs can affect various parts of the body, including the genitals, rectum, mouth, and throat. Some infections can spread to other organs if left untreated. Testing and treatment are essential for overall sexual health.

Yes, you can still get tested if you’re on your period! Most STI tests, including urine tests and blood work, are not affected by menstruation. If you need a vaginal swab or a pelvic exam, it may still be possible to proceed, but if you’re experiencing a heavier flow and feel uncomfortable, you might prefer to wait until your period is lighter or finished. That said, if you have symptoms or urgent concerns, don’t hesitate to get tested right away—your health comes first! If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out, and we’d be happy to guide you on the best timing for your test.

Yes! In many cases, we can provide treatment for your partner as well. This is called Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT), which allows us to prescribe treatment for your partner without them needing their own appointment. However, this depends on the specific infection being treated and local prescribing guidelines. If EPT is an option, we’ll make sure your partner gets the right medication and instructions. If a separate consultation is needed, we can guide them on how to book an appointment. Either way, we’re here to help make treatment as easy and accessible as possible for both of you!
