Intrauterine Device (IUD)
An intrauterine device, or IUD, is a small, flexible T-shaped device that provides highly effective birth control. Once in place, it works hard to prevent pregnancy and can keep you covered for years – making it a great option for those who want a “set it and forget it” solution.
There are two main types of IUDs: hormonal and copper. Each type works a bit differently, but they’re both reliable, safe, and discreet. You don’t have to remember to take a pill every day or worry about replacing it for years at a time. Plus, you can have it removed anytime if you decide you’re ready to try for pregnancy or want a different birth control option
Did you know an IUD can work as emergency contraception, too? If placed within five days after unprotected sex, an IUD can prevent pregnancy with high effectiveness. Unlike other “morning-after” options, an emergency IUD can keep protecting you for up to 10 years if you choose to leave it in! It’s a reliable, long-term solution that also gives you peace of mind in the moment.

How does an IUD work?
Copper IUDs prevent pregnancy by releasing copper, which acts as a spermicide, while hormonal IUDs release progestin to thicken cervical mucus and prevent sperm from reaching the egg, as well as reducing the uterine lining, which is needed to sustain a pregnancy,
How long do IUDs last?
Depending on the type, IUDs can provide protection for 3 to 10 years. Copper IUDs typically last 5-10 years, while hormonal IUDs last between 5 and 8 years.
What do I feel during my IUD insertion in Edmonton?
It is normal to experience discomfort or cramping during and after the insertion. Most patients describe cramping that is similar to their heaviest period day, while a smaller proportion describe cramping that is better or worse than their periods. The procedure is quick, and any discomfort is usually short-lived. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort, and in cases where it is worse than expected, prescription pain relievers can be provided.
When will my fertility be back after removing the IUD?
Fertility typically returns immediately after the IUD is removed, usually within a week. If you’re planning to conceive, you can start trying as soon as the IUD is taken out.
